The Truth Will Out

I’m sure many of you were like me in being disappointed at the way MTV handled the Best Act Ever, like it 7was a subpar award rather than… well, the ‘Best Ever’ and one of the hilights of the night.

To give you a better idea, here is a side by side comparison of two presentations.

Notice any differences? Here’s what we came up with off the cuff.

1) No nominee video sequences

2) No 3-2-1 countback

3) The award name didn’t come up in the background like the other awards.

Now some may ask, so what? Rick didn’t show, in fact you might even quote this article in the Times where it said.

Mr Godfrey said that MTV had “begged” Astley to come and sent a delegation to his manager. He added: “[Rick] has become a lovely joke. People have a lot of affection for him. It shows he has the most active fans. This is a digital phenomenon.”

The thing about short quotes is that they don’t give you the full picture. I’m sure MTV begged Rick to come but Richard Godfrey didn’t go into just how they wanted him to come. We covered this earlier yesterday about 6 hours before the event and we weren’t able to go into much detail, as our source did not wish to be revealed. You can tell it must have stirred up something within MTVNE’s HQ, as they were all over our site today… here is a grepped copy of our logs (we’ve always maintained a transparent visage).

We now, however, have another source who forwarded an email to us from Rick’s manager, which we’ll share with you below.

Thank you for your efforts.
what MTV proposed to me was, Rick to attend a press conferance the day before the TV show, and the award announced then, and at the TV show Rick to be backstage at the VIP bar with the award, then other artists would come by and sign Ricks award which would then be sold for charity.
from our point of view, Rick hanging around backstage with the Real Artists being wheeled past him, did not interest us at all! the award if we ever receive it, probably will end up being auctioned for charity,
I think MTV will think long and hard before they have a wildcard category again.

I guess the question we’re asking now is for MTV to please explain this situation, you begged him for what exactly?

If you’d like to contact MTV for answers, please use this contact form.

We’re all waiting for answers on why MTV were being douchebags, and why they were apparently so eager for the publicity for themselves but not willing to treat Rick and his award with dignity.

I’m sure their response will be something along the lines of “but they’re voting with programs”

Well, we’ve covered this MTV, we’ve shown evidence before of other acts using various similar methods and surprise surprise… they won. That argument has no merit.

So while we wait for answers or some spin, we’d like to take a moment and appeal to the better side of the fandom.

We know there are many Rick Astley fans out there that are angry with what happened. Please understand that the blame lays fairly and squarely on MTV’s shoulders and not with anyone else involved. We’ve had to delete well over 100 comments today with hate targeted at Perez or TH fans… they’re not the ones to blame guys. Perez Hilton particularly seems to be a great RickFan (we’d like to think he was running the RickVoter himself), saying:

I do LOVE Rick! I’ve only ever said good things about him and supported the campaign to get him the award!

Please help get this story out; we think we all deserve some answers from MTV.

Rick needs to achieve the recognition that he deserves!

  2. joe Says:

Dear MTV, we’d all love some reasons to not be pissed and disappointed.

    Love, Joe.

  3. Anonymous Says:

We are true Rick Astley fans and this wasn’t just a joke. At least let people know that we genuinly wanted Rick to win the award for the fact that he deserved it.

  4. FUUUUUUUUUUUU Says:

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  5. Fil Says:

    Well we must call anonymous

  6. Britfag Says:

    Complain posted and question asked.
Perez actually mocked TH a bit and seemed to be happy about the win.
MTV were being tools, probably because they didn’t manage to stop us all doing what we did.
Oh well, he won, we won, they lost, they lost sourly.
Still pissed about TH winning Headliner though, but still, it gave MTV no way of using the “Autovote is wrong” line.

  7. Anonymous Says:

Cliche, thank you, this is just the thing I was talking about in the other topic, we have to do something, Rick isn’t just a joke he’s a great performer.

  8. GerAnon Says:

    Please explain MTV…

  9. Anon Says:

MTV and the record companies didn’t want him to win, plain and simple. Even if Perez is a Rick fan, he also treated it like a joke when his name was revealed…

  10. EternalCat Says:

I recorded the entire EMA ceremony and watched a few of the other awards, and then Rick came up - it was like a fucking joke. It was just “yeehay rick astley, you’ve been rickrolled [i have no idea what this means and i dont care, but its in the script!!1]!” followed by a coupla lines of NGGYU. It was nothing.

  11. Cruxador Says:

    I emailed them the following:

So at the EMAs a couple days ago, Rick Astley was not in attendance. Now, a description of the intended ‘deal’ has been released by Rick’s manager. Apparently, what you wanted, in his words, was “Rick hanging around backstage with the Real Artists being wheeled past him”.
If you’ll pardon the language, WHAT THE FUCK!?!?
Why can MTV not show the proper respect to the best act that you channel has seen in some time? Instead you’d rather have sub-par artists (with the exception of U2 and Metallica, they are legitimately good even if they aren’t my style) all come and upstage Rick? I voted for Rick Astley (several times, as your website encouraged us to do) and now you’re denying him his proper place in the ceremonies? He won Best Act Ever, which sounds like by far the most important award there, and you sideline him? I guess it’s your show, but you’ve blown the last of your credibility away.

Please feel free to use some of my points or language.

  12. anon Says:

    Fuck MTV.
I said I was never gonna give him up and that’s what I’m gonna do!

  13. anypog Says:

    mtw get off the air…

  14. Anonymouse Says:

He said millions of votes, rather than over one billion. Also, this is complete shit. We should start protests or some shit. Fuck perez hiltom most of all, making us some sort of joke.

  15. Rick Astley Says:

i think what they did was wrong… they should have just taken it like men and given him the award!!!
i mean common noone else had over 9000 people voting for him… lets start a petition to get the info out of them!!!
i will get a link in a few mins!
MTV WE KNOW YOU WATCH(ED) THIS SITE!!! AND WE HAVE TO KNOW! WHAT THE EFF WENT ON!!!
YOUR WEBSITE SAID THAT YOU WERE NEVER GONNA GIVE US UP AND NEVER LET US DOWN!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT? YOU SERIOUSLY LET ALL OF US DOWN!!!!

    RYAN MITCHELL
    BUCKEYE, AZ!!!

  16. DrDaxxy Says:

Are you sure Rick or his manager didn’t have the idea?
Well, now that this is clear, I actually think it is quite cool.

  17. cliche Says:

I actually made a couple of comments on MTV’s blog saying how disappointed I was in their attitude to this award. Strangely they haven’t appeared yet despite things like the guy who says “Never Gonna Give You Up” over 9000 times being approved…

  18. Anonymouse Says:

    EDIT to my previous comment:

sorry perez, didn’t realise you were such a fan. Well, screw MTV anyway. Next year he can just win a better award.

  19. Annan Imus Says:

WHY THE FUCK, would MTV think that Astley would think that selling his award would be a “good replacement” to him actually receiving his award live and on TV? Answer me that MTV? 1 Billion Votes CAN’T BE WRONG!

  20. Paulb Says:

MTV you should die, you went downhill long time ago. Next year VOTE FOR RICK IN ALL THE CATEGORIES, so he can win all the Awards. Lets see what will happens to the show when MTV tries to pull a crappy stunt like that again.

  21. Rick Astley Says:

well i have started the petition i just need to wait for the authentication email…

  22. Paulb Says:

    HOW DARE YOU MTV

  23. Rick Astley Says:

    HERE YOU GO!!!

THAT IS THE PETETION… AND IF THE OWNER OF BEST ACT EVER DOT COM WANTS TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE PETETION TELL ME I WILL HAND IT OVER.

  24. Osquane Says:

Rick should shit on the award and send it back. Fuck mtv.

  25. MasterOfTeapots Says:

Good petition, Rickey. This is utter bullcrab. Mutated such. We wanted justice, and we got canoodled in the buttox! Preposterous!

Get your hay forks and tourches, we will get those answers!

  26. Rick Astley Says:

Thank you… but i would never have had the inspiration if mtv hadnt effed up.

  27. Elmar Says:

Rick didn’t deserve anything either. Imo someone much bigger and longer in the music business deserved that award. Rick is just an internet goof. Please tell me what other great hits he had? Any? EXCEPT the rickroll song? If you can’t name at least 3, then it proves that the award was just a fuck up. Rick Astley is undeserving.

  28. RS Says:

I’ve watch a few German news programs, a lot reported about ema and “great” Tokio Hotel, every award was mentioned exspect Best Act Ever and Rick’s name wasn’t said even one time.
So MTVs tricks seem to work out.

  29. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- Says:

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
    Epic, EPIC faggot-tree.
    Needs chemo.

  30. Anon Says:

@ Elmar: He had 8 consecutive number 1 singles.

  31. cliche Says:

@Elmar: not sure if you’re trolling but I’ll bite:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Astley_discography
Count all the ‘1’s and the ‘Platinums’, and the other top-tens.
In fact, we were enjoying ‘Together Forever’ at work today…

  32. Anon Says:

    This is fucking bullshit.

  33. anon Says:

    Sign the petition!
Sent an e-mail of complaint to MTV (you should do this too), if they grace me with a reply i will post

  34. MS Says:

I can’t feel bad for Risk Astley when clearly the biggest loser on the night was Leona Lewis. This girl can also sing and she truly deserved two or three awards on merit. They established a separate points system in the Europe’s Favourite Act category that was so poorly designed, it allowed an obscure figure from Turkey to win. And Britney Spears picked up two awards when she has done virtually nothing for 12 months. The consensus across top music forums is not one of surprise. MTV has no integrity, people say. And it has been this way for years.

  35. Steve Jobs Says:

    Who cares, Screw mtv.
Rick Astley is probably relieved he did not have to go to the stupid awards.
As much as I would have liked him to go and receive some award. I feel satisfied in knowing Rick is very proud of all of us. for doing the unthinkable.
It is the end my friends. Shall we all do this again in 2009

  36. Steve Jobs Says:

Wow I just watched your youtube link of tokyo hotel taking their award.
Is that for real, the way the dud talks? Is it because he german or is he just retarded?
I have some Austrian friends who have bad english but nothing like that. Ha HA HA

  37. annette sessis Says:

Mark, Thank-you for this website. Rick Astley is a great Performer. His voice is Amazing. He is known all over the world. He has the Class of no other in this Business. I do not blame him for not going. MTV could have done a short Bio on him in the Background on screen. From the 80s-to his album Portrait. It could have showcased his great songs. His music is Real Music. No one in the Music Business today can come close to THE MAN WITH THE VOICE . If i could right now ,I would fly to Denmark and get Front row seats to see him in concert.

  38. MS Says:

    http://ema.mtv.co.uk/assets/pdf/how-voting-works.co.uk.pdf

The official “MTV Voting Guide” explains how the “special” points system works. It all sounds reasonable and fair. Unfortunately, MTV did not log each voters IP address, so fans of less popular nominees began submitting votes across the 22 different domains, helpfully provided by MTV in the drop down menu on the main EMA page, thus gaining a risible number of points. They effectively designed and implemented a system that was diametrically the opposite of what they hoped for — fairness. And in so doing, MTV dumped on a genuinely deserving artist, named Leona Lewis. When can we expect an apology?

  39. RS Says:

    @Steve Robs
It’s rather difficult for a German to speak English (or French e.g), because there is a great difference of the sounds of the languages. But I guess (s)he never really learned good English in school.
I think it’s easier for us to speak languages like Russian or Latin.

If someone wants to screw MTV at the next awards, I really don’t want to see Rick there, because that would definitely let him look like a joke.
Some random Black Metal band would be better imo.

  40. Anon Says:

    Dragonforce.

    Dragonforce will win EVERYTHING.

  41. Given up Says:

Just another thing, when I looked in a Swedish newspaper, winner in all acts were there, except one: Best Act Ever wasn’t even mentioned. Why?

  42. Vote4Rick Says:

@MS - Those points system refers to the one category of Europe’s favourite act.
It’s also interesting to note that that document has changed since the start of voting (when I wrote the ‘We’re Not Cheating’ post) as I saved a copy then just incase it did change.

You can view that copy online here.
    http://www.bestactever.com/media/how-voting-works.co.uk.pdf

  43. anonymous Says:

people still think they can piss off The Internet as a collective and get away with it? maybe we should set up a meeting between MTV executives and hal turner to get the point across.

  44. Anonymiss Says:

Angry, yet cordial complaint sent to MTV

@Elmar - Together Forever, When I Fall In Love, Cry For Help, Hopelessly, Take Me To Your Heart, Whenever You Need Somebody…Rick Astley is not just a joke, he’s a great performer, a fabulous showman and a deserving musician.

  45. ODB Says:

I’m just gonna paraphrase the gist of this again for dramatic effect, since Tops’ email was very matter-of-fact and doesn’t fully convey how badly MTV have treated Rick (and Anon). Perhaps he was pulling his punches to keep the Internet Hate Machine from being unleashed upon MTV and the resulting carnage.

Let’s not forget how much press Rick’s nomination and this site’s considerable efforts to get him his award have generated for MTV and the EMAs throughout the campaign -that’s over a month of free publicity that actually sold the show and appealed to a global audience rather than the usual EU fanbase.

In effect, Rick’s invitation to the awards was revoked after MTV approached Rick with an ultimatum that any dignified person with a shred of self-respect would have turned-down.

MTV ‘offered’ to present Rick with his Best Act Ever award at a press conference the day before the awards show. Then their plan was to have Rick ‘hang out’ with his award in the wings, backstage at the artists’ ‘VIP bar’ during the show and wait for all the ‘real artists’ come by and sign the award which they would then auction for charity. If they’d have asked him, they would have found out that he planned to do this anyway, but this wasn’t a proposal, it was an ‘order’.

I’m not sure exactly how the BAE award would have been dealt with had Rick agreed to these ‘terms’ but MTV had already decided that there would be no live performance and -seeing as the award had already been presented the day before- there would have been no actual on-stage presentation nor chance for Rick to thank his fans.

Rick told them to fuck off. (I, for one, am ODB and I support this message).

So basically, MTV wanted Rick to have as little exposure as possible, tucked away behind the scenes to provide the occasional filler material as the ‘real talent’ (like Tokio Hotel!!!) passed through to add their ‘valuable’ autographs to Rick’s award as if to validate it.

tl;dr: Rick’s nomination and win provided MTV’s EMAs with a tsunami of free press and a boost in global ratings. He was rewarded with the opportunity to be a prop on the set of their big show.

At the very least, a public apology from MTV is in order and Rick should get the award he earned asap. He still hasn’t been contacted about who has his award and/or when/if he is to receive it so that he can auction it off to the charity of his choice.

To say MTV showed no class in the handling of this matter is a gross understatement and the lack of respect shown to Rick, his team and his fans is disgraceful and bush league. MTV should be ashamed of this entire episode.

As a veteran of the music business, I can assure you that if MTV pulled this shit on a contemporary act with major label backing, MTV would be looking at major problems, ’sanctions’ and would shitting bricks right now. But Rick doesn’t have any of that /b/lackup so I’m sure they’re not losing sleep over it.

In closing, I’d just like to add my own “Fuck off” to MTV along with the one Rick sent them. I’m more determined than evar to see this through and get Rick the award he deserved and earned.

    ODB

PS. I’m not one to send up a PA signal from a Gotham rooftop, but I’m pretty sure ebaums Dark Knights are currently looking at this as a record label Final Boss would. Anyone looking to ‘work for the music biz’, check ED’s “Rick The Vote” article and wear protection. Also, forget about Tokio Hotel and Perez Hilton…they’re beside the point.

  46. Chac Says:

yeah man i watn to see rick with the prize too. com eon!

  47. Rick Astley's Mum Says:

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

  48. Wes Says:

    Damn MTV!
Let’s get them back, and make sure Rick get’s the credit he deserves.
    Sounds fun :)

  49. Paulb Says:

NEXT YEAR, we will nominate Rick for EVERY category. And he will win all of them. A big F*** You to MTV

  50. Snoodle Says:

He may be an internet joke technically. But I don’t know many people who actually mind a RickRoll. The guy has a gorgeous voice…although after so many years of non-music-related programming perhaps MTV can’t judge these things anymore…

  51. tard asd Says:

that’s it, never gonna watch anything associated with MTV again.
    … which won’t be hard, considering I don’t have a TV.

  52. Be4ore Says:

    I Signed the petition
    http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/MTVEMAAWARDS

    good idea.
Only too bad some people are signing with names like “David Davidson” and like that, that’ll work against us.

  53. schnopsnosn Says:

the guy from tokio hotel is just a fag. that’s why his english is so terrible.
and english isn’t hard at all for german speaking people(i’m austrian myself), those lazy fucks just don’t put any effort in it at all.

  54. Dave Says:

During the voting, we never gave him up.
When the results were “announced”, we never gave him up.
NOW, in this complaint, lets do the same.

    Screw MTV.

Rick Astley and NGGYU is NOT A JOKE.

  55. Van Says:

Rick, we’re never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down.

  56. qwerty Says:

“And the best act ever is… RICK ASTLEY!
But we didn’t invite him MUHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!
Oh and I’ll take his price lololololololloollolooll”

  57. LoE Says:

fire up the internet hate machine!

  58. Alfred_Nonymous Says:

I’m dutch (though commonly mistaken to be german) and I have perfect English vocabulary and pronunciation.
so being German is no excuse

also, my favorite Rick Astley song is Together Forever, it hasn’t got anything to do with rickroll (except for the fact that he’s the same guy)

  59. MOAR Says:

I accidentally Tokio Hotel with a a baseball bat

  60. Anonymous Says:

my theory is that MTV, even if that sounds quite unlikely, didn’t expect rick astley to win the vote even tho they should have known with whom they’re dealing with when letting him join the competition.
so when they closed the polls and rick had over a gazillion votes they were like “fuck, what have WE DONE??”.
of course they didn’t let him perform because he doesn’t fit into MTVs program. it would have been a desaster for MTV to present an artist who is not suitable for mass consumption. to put it simply: those awards mean absolutely NOTHING. the only thing MTV gets out of this is money. artists who don’t represent MTV’s idealistic vision of a popstar, have absolutely no chance to appear in their program … it just doesn’t pay.
so they made a compromise, they sold it as a Rickroll and acted totaly stupid on television.

you also have to understand that MTVs program is controled by what the avarage pubescent teenager wants to see and the MTV EMA is one of their biggest events … EVEN IF they really wanted to have rick on stage i don’t think they were willing to risk it.

  61. Anonymous Says:

@Anonymous: I find it hard to believe that after Rick got a metric fuckton of votes in the write-in phase, MTV wouldn’t have figured out who was going to win. Yes, they tried to stop us, but even if we had voted manually, we would have been able to win… that’s how it happened with the write-in votes.

  62. Legion Says:

Ah well, its over now I guess. We can rage all we want, it aint gonna change anything :/

  63. ped Says:

after watch the 2 videos, all i have to say is:

  66. Dont get this? Says:

    What happened really
Why are you all so mad, what happened. And why are you mad at tokio hotel?
    Explain to me

  67. O-Z Says:

Why Rick didn’t even perform NGGYU at EMAs? :(

  68. cliche Says:

@Anon - V4R’s probably asleep so thought I might correct a few assumptions.
    - Rick was invited initially, he was even invited to perform. However MTV later withdrew these invitations and tried to set up the events as described above. We can’t guarantee he’d have chosen to go if he’d been treated like a Real Artist but what would you think given the quote from his manager?
    - Rick is not a ‘one hit wonder’; he has had over a dozen top-30 singles and sold 40 million records.
    - the server failure was caused by MTV accidentally misconfiguring it; we pointed this out to them and they fixed it. The whole point of a centrally-controlled delay mechanism was to avoid causing any hurt to MTV’s servers - and this worked very well.
    - if you’re not trolling please present any evidence you may have; and you might as well pick a name (seeing as we already have quite a few ‘Anon’s commenting here)

  69. anomnom Says:

we should try and get in touch with whoever it was at mtv that did the ‘binary roll’ on mtv’s home page
take down mtv from the inside…

  70. Rick Astley Says:

    @ Be4ore
i will try to moderate them, but i am not sure if that is someones real name or a fake one…

  71. mek Says:

  73. The Non-Anonymous Says:

Well this has completely saddened me. I was so happy at what I believed was happening with his performances and receiving of the award. I would not even know who would blame Perez! If you look at him he even dislikes the idea of TH winning Best Act Evar, Rick Voter ftw! I just know that someone will start a raid and MTV will get hurt by it in some way or another. I’ve followed this closely and I think that they where just worried about what would happen to the audience if Rick was there. But I mean it would have been what 1 minute? I don’t think it should have been a problem, I was going to watch it but when I heard that Rick would not be performing OR collecting his own award I decided “Why the hell should I?” We are anonymous! We do not forgive! We do not forget! Expect us!

  74. Yusayoh Says:

    Uhhhh now what.

  75. Anonymous Says:

“Now considering what we know of Rick, that he’s a private person and shies away from publicity or anything remotely celebrity related, it’s hardly surprising that he didn’t want to perform at the awards.”
Oh, so that’s why he still does concerts! That’s why he still goes on tv shows! That’s why he will be at the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade… Wait, what?
“I’ve compared both videos above, and really, what do you expect? Tokio Hotel were there to claim there award, Rick wasn’t. Should they have employed the use of a cardboard cutout?”
There’s this new technology that allows you to record images than can then be played back later. Amazing, I know! Observe:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rAn_SYeFCE
See! Britney got to thank her fans even though she wasn’t there. Funny how that didn’t work for Rick.

BTW, as big of a failiure as /b/ritney is, I do have to agree with her telling people to PARTY HARD

  76. ODB Says:

I just wrote to Perez Hilton to find out if he has Rick’s award or MTV took it back. I also gave him a taste of the MTV faggotry and behind-the-scenes drama of MTV vs Rick Astley. Hopefully it will sufficiently light up his drama radar and he’ll join our unfinished business.

    1. We still need to get Rick his award.

    2. MTV needs to fess up to their shenanigans and apologise to Rick and his team.

    3. ???

    4. MTV needs to drop the M from MTV since it rarely has any musical content and when it does, it usually doesn’t qualify as ‘music’.

  77. Anonymaus Says:

This is totally unacceptable. We will not rest until MTV has been brought to justice. (Okay, we may sleep but our computers won’t amirite?) Fire up the Hate Machine, we won’t stand for this. I do suppose, however, that we have successfully proved that internet polls are fucked. We will never give Rick up, Never let him down, and certainly, NEVER EVER run around and desert him. I’ve got a lot more to say, but for now, I’ll leave YOU (MTV) with this thought: We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.

  78. Rick Astley Says:

    @ODB

Where is the profit… you have the “???” but no profit!

  79. Steve Jobs Says:

    Yes!
Let us raise an internet army to make MTV pay for their heresy!

if anything, regardless of how we voted or whatever, the actual presentation of the award was simply horrific.

I mean, what if someone else won the award, would they have still done the whole “OH HEY GUYS LETS QUICKLY TELL YOU WHO WAS NOMINATED. U2, BRITNEY SPEARS…etc” and given it a sub-par performance compared to the other awards?

There is nothing that should have caused them to do something like this, how hard would it have been to throw together the video nominee sequences and give it the same effort as any other award (with a simple “oh rick couldn’t make it tonight so i’ll accept the award on his behalf” [providing they actually get the award to rick.])

I didn’t watch the EMA’s, they showed it a bit delayed over here in Australia, so I managed to check what happened beforehand in regards to rick + BAE, and if I had sat down and actually watched it, I would have been incredibly disappointed.

MTV needs to say something here, but they’ll probably go for the “quick let this blow over” approach and say nothing, even looking at it from a different perspective of someone who didn’t know this site/community was around, it downgrades the award big time and makes it look incredibly stupid. Especially with the random dancing to NGGYU and the “urgh” when Perez said Tokio Hotel as a nominee (ps. no hate to Perez, even though his random dancing and singing was a bit awkward.)

But seriously, MTV gave the “internet” an open nomination and open voting for an award called “Best Act Ever”, how the hell could they not see this coming? (even the randoms who like rickrolling outnumber a few other nominee’s fanbases)

  89. seedoubleyou Says:

bah, I thought I spaced that out more, wall of text apologises.

  90. david mudkips Says:

    This was my message

Hey I would just like to know why Rick Astley wasn’t at the EMA’s to receive his award. Sure Katy and Perez said he was unable/unavailable/shy(lol), but I would like to know what really happened. Was he too old school and you didn’t want to tarnish your young hip appeal by having him onstage?

A source of mine told me you originally planned for him to announce his award at a press conference the day before and then be backstage at the VIP bar during the award. That’s just unfair. He won his award fair and square, and I just want to know why he wasn’t there to receive it.

    Thanks,
    David.

  92. Wes Says:

We are the internet. We can do anything.

  93. ped Says:

I had a feeling that could happen (DDoS attack or a raid), but somehow I think it’ll bring suckage to all (mtv, Rick’s supporters, and possibly Rick himself). In this case I think it would be best to stick to more peaceful and less drastic courses of action.

  95. polycarbonate1 Says:

    @ped - Exactly.
“Fear takes hold as Anons the Internet over unite in rage against MTV.” Things would most likely get ugly for all involved, and the end result would be something that would probably best be avoided.

  96. Anonymaus Says:

The day we Give Rick up, let him down, run around, desert him, and let this blow over; is the day I accidentally my entire high school. shaMTV, we will bring you so much bad press, you will rue the day you tried to stick it to the almighty internet. This. Is. WAR.

  97. Vote4Rick Says:

    @everyone
Quite simply, a DOS of any kind will not solve any of the problems and will only create further problems for yourselves.

We here at bestactever.com do NOT support or condone any kind of action like that.

Apart from getting MTV to apologise for the way they handled the situation (which isn’t going to happen) there really isn’t much more we can do sorry to say.

All this does is underline why MTV is becoming more irrelevant as a media company as time marches on because they don’t embrace the new media trend. They will be the arbiters of their own demise.

I think from our end the matter is pretty much closed - a win is a win for Rick, which is what we set out to do.

  98. Anonymouse Says:

http://promo.kerrang.com/kerrang/kerrangpoll2008/# vote in this, make sure rick wins every category. Especially sexiest male, he’s already got over 2 million votes there. And nominate Tokio Hotel for worst act.

i wrote an angry email to mtv about this.
heres a copy for your viewing pleasure:
    Dear MTV
i am writing in regard to the best act ever award that was presented to Rick Astley during the Liverpool EMAs. I watched the whole show and was very dissapointed when Rick astley did not appear, and you said it was because he was “shy”. A person who had a number 1 hit single in 16 countries is not shy.You have treated the award, the voters, and Rick as a joke, and i think i speak on behalf of everyone who voted in saying i am never buying one of your CDs or watching one of your shows again. You have given us up, let us down, run around and deserted all the people who voted for Rick Astley. You have made us cry, said goodbye, told a lie, and hurt us, but heed this warning. This outrage will not soon be forgotten. One way or another,Rick Astley WILL get the award.

  109. charles Says:

    Same on you MTV!

What a disgrace to treat a super star like this
